Twice Burned, Twice Died
J. Scott Smith
Twice the fire has burned
With flames high and uncontrolled;
Twice the fire was spurned
To the deep and icy cold.
Twice burned, twice died;
Yet the ember glows on.
"Burned out!" I cried;
Yet the cinder goes on.
Twice burned, twice died;
Yet still a wisp of smoke.
"The soul," said I,
"Has been freed by death's stroke."
Twice burned, twice died;
Yet now twice have I lied.
"'Tis dead," I lied,
"And shall not be revived!"
Twice the fire has burned
With flames high and uncontrolled;
Twice the fire returned
From the deep and icy cold.
